Horses in captivity display much of the same instinctive behavior as their wild cousins. They sleep and graze all day long. They do what they can to get relief from heat and cold. When the herd rests, there is always one horse on watch, ready to alert the herd if there is danger. This picture shows two horses on guard duty at a bluff where they can see a great distance and check the wind for smells of danger. Horses often form close bonds within their herd and will protect each other in danger. |
