During his first year at the University of Victoria, while taking fine art, David Brougham had the opportunity to do a study of Orca whales. The owner of Sealand of the Pacific, now Oak Bay Marina, sponsored him to do a photographic and film study of these rare Species. During this time, David was introduced to the famous Jacques Cousteau Scientists, who came to study and film these unique whales. Brougham had the honor of being allowed to do some filming with them. Later in life, this gave him the inspiration to paint some of his most popular coastal scenes. David is a past President of the Victoria Society of Artists, a founding member of a successful artists Co-Op in Victoria, and the original organizer for one of the largest gatherings of artists, famous and budding in British Columbia, at the world renowned gardens of Hatley Castle, now Royal Roads University. David was chosen by an International Jury to represent Canada at the prestigious Biennale Internazionale Dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence Italy. Approximately 600 artists are chosen worldwide, to attend this event every two years.

Statement from David Brougham:
I am a Canadian Watercolour artist whose scene's range from the inspiring west coast to the spiritual forests of northern British Columbia. The natural beauty of our country has inspired my love of art. The range of work that I produce is characterized by a sense of realism, although I love the freedom that watercolours give when applied wet into wet to create interesting values and patterns. In the last few years, I have added the medium of acrylic and sometimes used it with watercolour to produce mixed media works involving wildlife, portraits, and abstract paintings.
