Ginette used to work at textile design and made these wonderful garments, which everybody admired. She referred to herself as being left handed, but she used her right hand to write and we didn't really think too much of it. A few years ago, she fell and broke her right wrist. It was badly dealt with at the E&A and had to undergo an emergency operation to save the median nerve; without which the hand would have been a Wright-off. As Ginette was recovering, in pain and plaster, she asked for some paintbrushes and paint (which she always had handy and did the occasional foray in) and, without saying much, Ginette Ashkenazy began to paint. Then, we were really surprised, because the art that came out was mature, good, as if coming out of the hand of an experienced painter. The stiles and subject matter was varied, as if in a few weeks Ginette was going through period's landscapes, various figurative subjects and expressive abstract paintings appeared to our delight.

Today, she is a full time artist, cannot use her right hand for writing any more. It seems that all her energies have been released; or as she says, "I have been driving with the hand break on all these years." - Prof. E.A. Markham Hallam Sheffield University
